Nitrogen fixation by a facultative bacillus.

چکیده
A basic problem in biological nitrogen fixation is the distribution of this property among various organisms. Although several decades ago numerous bacteria were reported to fix molecular nitrogen, very few such claims survived because the proof was often based upon an unimpressive increase in visual turbidity or Kjeldahl nitrogen after prolonged culture. The limitation of these methods has been discussed (Wilson, 1952). During his extensive studies on Bacillus asterosporus, now regarded as identical with Bacillus polymyxa, Bredemann (1908) reported nitrogen fixation by some strains. However, owing to uncertainties in the measurement of fixation, not much attention has been paid to this report. For example, this claim is not mentioned in the discussion of Bacillus asterosporus in the 6th edition of Bergey's Manual. Several years ago one of us isolated a spore former from soil in Nagoya, Japan, that rapidly fixed molecular nitrogen anaerobically (Hino, 1955). This bacterium was reported as a strain of Clostridium, as the procedures described by Waksman (1932) for isolation of nitrogen-fixing clostridia were used. Also it formed clostridia and produced acid and gas from carbohydrates. During further studies of nitrogen fixation by this organism, however, properties different from those of the clostridia were observed. Taxonomic investigations were then undertaken and, as will be reported in this paper, the results revealed that the bacterium closely resembles Bacillus polymyxa. Oxygen has a dual effect on the inorganic nitrogen metabolism of this bacteriumspecific inhibition of nitrogen fixation and stimulation of nitrate utilization.

Facultative versus obligate nitrogen fixation strategies and their ecosystem consequences.
Symbiotic nitrogen (N) fixers are critical components of many terrestrial ecosystems. There is evidence that some N fixers fix N at the same rate regardless of environmental conditions (a strategy we call obligate), while others adjust N fixation to meet their needs (a strategy we call facultative). Although these strategies are likely to have qualitatively different impacts on their environmen...
متن کاملNitrogen fixation strategies can explain the latitudinal shift in nitrogen-fixing tree abundance.
The rarity of symbiotic nitrogen-fixing trees in higher-latitude compared to lower-latitude forests is paradoxical because higher-latitude soils are relatively N poor. Using national-scale forest inventories from the United States and Mexico, we show that the latitudinal abundance distribution of N-fixing trees (more than 10 times less abundant poleward of 35 degrees N) coincides with a latitud...

متن کاملInoculation of Bacillus sphaericus UPMB-10 to Young Oil Palm and Measurement of Its Uptake of Fixed Nitrogen Using the 15N Isotope Dilution Technique
There are increasing applications of diazotrophic rhizobacteria in the sustainable agriculture system. A field experiment on young immature oil palm was conducted to quantify the uptake of N derived from N₂ fixation by the diazotroph Bacillus sphaericus strain UPMB-10, using the ¹⁵N isotope dilution method. Eight months after ¹⁵N application, young immature oil palms that received 67% of standa...
متن کاملPresence of nitrogen fixing Klebsiella pneumoniae in the gut of the Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus).
A gram-negative facultative anaerobic enteric bacterium, Klebsiella pneumoniae was isolated from the hindgut of the Formosan subterranean termite (FST). It was characterized using, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis, BIOLOG assay, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and biochemical studies. The role of this isolate seems to be nitrogen fixation because the ...
